The Los Angeles Rams and franchise quarterback Jared Goff came to terms on an extension Tuesday that will keep him with the team through 2024. It is a deal that will pay him $110 million in guarantees, the most in NFL history. The deal has a total value of $134 million. Which is why it is so impressive that they kept it quiet.
After Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz got his extension, many speculated when Goff’s deal would get done. It did light a fire to speed up the deal as Goff said during a presser.
“I’m very happy we got it done. I think that’s the best way to put it. I think Carson getting his done did accelerate the process a bit but I’m very happy that we are done and I can just go play football and not worry about it”
The murmurs about a contract began to percolate but never became a national conversation. It is quite the inverse of the recent contract discussions between the Dallas Cowboys and their star players.
Most notably quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott’s contract disputes with the Cowboys was the talk of most the offseason. A conversation that revolved around his holdout and negotiating through the media done by the front office.
The two sides finally came to an agreement on Elliott’s deal but the whole ordeal was a public spectacle. A spectacle that even Goff took notice of.
“I’ve enjoyed watching the media circus around the league and understanding that here we had something going on that was between us and wasn’t involved with people outside of this building. You know, I’ve enjoyed that and I appreciate them for that.”
This falls in line with how the Rams have done business over the years. Including their deals for wideout Brandin Cooks, running back Todd Gurley and defensive tackle Aaron Donald. A lowkey affair without media narratives surrounding it all.
In many ways, that is the culture of this team. While the product on the field may be loud and flashy, the team itself operate under the radar. Making moves that no one can predict until it has already happened.
