The Los Angeles Rams finally broke their streak of three consecutive losses with a resounding win over the Atlanta Falcons. It was a win they got on the strength of their new-look defense. The 37-10 win in Atlanta was the first for the Rams dating back to 2001.
The Rams defense was all over the Falcons throughout the day. Completely grounding an Atlanta offense with plenty of talent. The Falcons offense was only able to total 224 yards.
Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was 16 of 27 for 159 yards and one interception. His quarterback rating was a 60.6. The Rams were able to get to Ryan for five sacks and one lost fumble.
However, a lot of the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive success was a result of the new acquisition in cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey’s matchup on Sunday was All-Pro wide receiver, Julio Jones. One of the marquees in the game today and also Ryan’s favorite target.
He held Jones to four catches when lined up against him. He even forced a fumble which led to a turnover. Head coach Sean McVay spoke on Ramsey’s play:
“He demonstrated that coming up and he’s getting a forced fumble yesterday on a cross-crack play. I just think whether it’s competing in coverage or even just in run support, when he’s asked to do that, he’s demonstrated just he’s got a knack for making plays and then he plays tough, he plays physical.”
Ramsey’s defense against Jones did allow the defense to get to Ryan frequently.
The Rams’ front line had a day teeing off on Ryan. Outside linebacker Dante Fowler specifically was all over him with three sacks and a fumble recovery.
It was the best showing for the Rams defense all year considering they were playing a fully healthy Falcons offense. As a result, it does give this team some momentum going into their London game.
Their defense will improve as time passes and all the new pieces mesh. Hopefully, they will be able to get into a better groove as they face the Cincinnati Bengals.
