Los Angeles Rams Darrell Henderson might see action against 49ers

The Los Angeles Rams running game has been non-existent through five games this season. There is much anticipation for running back Darrell Henderson who has not gotten true in-game action so far. It is one of the biggest questions going into Sunday’s game where Todd Gurley is currently listed as doubtful.

The Rams took Henderson with the 70th overall pick in the third round of this year’s draft. Many believe the inspiration for the pick came from looming questions surrounding Gurley’s knee at the time. The Rams went into the 2019 playoffs with Gurley less than 100 percent.

It became clear when the Rams offense was struggling to get off the ground with an ailing Gurley. Gurley was averaging 22.5 touches through the first 14 games of last season. In the final three games, his touches went down to an average of 11.3.

While the team has made assurances that they believe in Gurley and his ability to still be the every-down back, Henderson does seem to be a form of an insurance policy. The Rams’ rushing offense has yet to resemble its previous prowess.

The Rams are currently 22nd in the NFL in rushing yards with 96.2 yards per game and 4.2 yards per attempt. As a result, the team has yet to recapture their previous form from last season.

However, there is hope that the offense will be able to get off the ground this weekend against the San Francisco 49ers. Particularly, with Henderson and running back Malcolm Brown possibly sharing the carries.

Head coach Sean McVay spoke on Henderson’s ability as a player during a press conference:

“He is a complete back like those other two. He’s a slasher-type runner,” said McVay. “I’ve heard (Former Head Coach) Mike Shanahan say this, ‘Some of the best runners you’re around, usually you don’t have to tell them how to run the ball.’ They have a good feel for it and they have an understanding of where the play starts.

Henderson put his talent on display at Memphis accumulating 4,303 scrimmage yards, and 44 total touchdowns. Many believe Henderson can provide a strong punch for the Rams offense. Hopefully, he will do just that if given the opportunity against the 49ers.
